Google Announces Generative AI Performance Reports in Search Console

Since Google launched AI Overviews in the UK (August 2024) and AI Mode (July 2025) the question on everyone’s lips has been, “Is our content appearing there?”

But information about your site’s visibility in generative AI search results has been difficult to isolate. Until now, Search Console Performance reports have bundled up impression* data from AI-driven visibility into the metrics it displays from the “regular” search results, with no way to filter the two.

(*Impressions are how many times links to your site were shown to a user, either in a generative AI feature or more traditional links in Google Search, regardless of whether they were clicked.)

That’s about to change, with an announcement from Google on 3rd June 2026 about the introduction of new Generative AI Performance Reports in Search Console.

What we can learn from the new report

The metrics shown in these new reports will help site owners and SEOs understand how visible their content is in Google’s generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. This in turn can heavily influence decisions around their content strategy:

Total Impressions – View how many impressions your site gets within generative AI features in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Impressions per URL – Filter the report by URL, so you know which pages are performing well in Google’s generative AI features, and which might need attention.
Performance by country and device – You can also filter by country and device type, for even more granular analysis.
Date range – Just as you can in the regular Performance Report, you’ll be able to specify a date range to examine.

As with regular Performance Reports in Search Console, you’ll be able to export the generative AI performance report data. This enables you to study it / slice and dice it at a more granular level.

It’s not rolled out globally yet

Don’t worry if you don’t see the new report in Search Console just yet. Google says the AI Performance Report is currently being thoroughly tested by a small sub-set of sites, so hopefully it will roll out more widely to everyone’s Google Search Console accounts soon.

Caveat – Google suggests that even after it’s available everywhere, you might only see this report once your site generates a certain level of generative AI impressions. This means that new sites gaining traction, or older sites with real performance or quality issues, may not benefit.

My takeaway…good – could be better

I’m a huge fan of Google Search Console, so the Generative AI Performance Report is a very welcome additional feature. However, I view it as a starting point, not the end game.

Crucially, the report doesn’t provide click or search query data, as the regular Performance Report does. It’s a big gap, and I really hope Google moves quickly to fill it.

Of course, it’s helpful to understand which pages of our site are getting more (or less) visibility in Google’s generative AI features. But until we have information about the search queries triggering those impressions, and the data around click-throughs, we’re auditing site performance with one arm tied behind our back.

To be fair, Google says it is “continuing to work with website owners to understand what insights will be most helpful”. This makes me hopeful that these metrics will be added later.
